Warner Lambert Award

Later to become the Parke-Davis Award, then the Parke-Davis (UpJohn) Award, and later still the BVZS/FZG Award.

Originally envisaged at 75th Council meeting on December 4th 1979, it was to be presented for "Outstanding contributions in the field of Veterinary Care of Reptiles and Amphibians". Warner Lambert tentatively agreed for a limited period to sponsor an award of £50 annually along with a certificate for the person who had contributed most to scientific study of Reptiles. It was not necessarily to be for Vets or British residents.

Council agreed that Dr. Elkin should be the first recipient. A panel was set up to judge the award. BSAVA were also involved and it was to be awarded at BSAVA Congress in April 1980 - we have colour photographs of the presentation. Later awards were to be presented at BVZS meetings.

BVZS Prize

First indications of this prize found in Council minutes with no indications of the criteria! It was first presented to Ian Keymer for 2 papers published in the Veterinary Record on Diseases of Tortoises and Terrapins. His prize was the latest edition of Murray Fowler's book to be presented at Autumn meeting 1979.

1984 - Dr John Baker for article "Morbidity and Mortality of Grey Seal Pups" His prize was the new Murray Fowler book.


In 1985 BVZS prize to be sponsored by Holt-Saunders the criteria being “The best Zoological Medicine paper published in a Journal in English”

VetArk Student Award Peter Scott first proposed this at Council on December 10th 1991 as an "annual award of say, £100, for a project written by a student”

2010 (Dudley meeting) - Julia Henken for "Marek's disease in Back yard Poultry - a quick clinical update "  She was presented with a cheque for £150 by Peter Scott.


Bayer Student Award 2002 (Chester meeting) - Bayer paid £100.00 prize.
2009 (York meeting) - Hannah Rowland for "Diagnosis and Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis in a Roloway Monkey (Cercopithecus roloway).
2012 (Slimbridge meeting) - Stephanie Jayson for "Feather plucking in African Grey parrots and cockatoos."


Harry Steele-Bodger Award On May 3rd 1969 nominations asked for.
At September 8th 1970 Council meeting, the name of Dr. R. J. Roberts of Glasgow written to by BVZS Hon. Sec asking if OK for his name to go forward as a nomination for this award.

In 1970 again a Council agenda item and award to be awarded in 1972.

Poster Prizes (posters presented at a BVZS meeting)
At the 50th Anniversary meeting awarded to Helen Provan for “Investigating the Aetiology of Urogenital Carcinoma in Californian Sea Lions - A case control study.” Co-authors were A. Hall, J. Hammond, F. Gulland and K. Acevedo-Whitehouse.
